Your life with music

For folks who have a yearning for music.

But you’ve struggled to fit music into your life, in a way that works for you.

Alice Bulmer music life coach

When music isn’t in your regular life, you feel like you’re missing out on something important.

But it keeps getting squeezed out by everything else. Like work. And family.

And feeding the chickens. (I’m joking, sort-of.)

I’d love to help you make music part of your world.

In a way that feels right for you.

This is for you if you have a longing for music that isn’t being satisfied.

Whether you’re a burned out musician who hasn’t yet found your musical home.

Or if you are just plain yearning to make music. But you don’t know how to get started.

You know music is that thing that gives you the most joy and fun you’ve ever experienced, that’s as vitally important to you as sunlight.

But it gets sidelined, because you need to make a living, and look after the family, and keep all the balls in the air.

You stop making music. And there’s this huge empty gap in your life.

When you’re not making music regularly you don’t feel fully alive.

You have musical dreams and projects, but you just can’t seem to get them off the ground.

I know, you’ve already tried a lot of things.

You can play a bunch of instruments and different music genres. But you haven’t yet found one that really suits you.

You’ve done years of expensive musical training, only to find you don’t love the path it’s taking you down.

You’ve signed up to work with music teachers and singing teachers, but you’re feeling discouraged.

Maybe you have a music-related job that was great at the beginning. But now you’re burned out, it’s sucking your soul, it’s killing you inside. But you don’t think you can leave, because that’s what you need to do to make a living as a musician.

You’re getting paid to make music that you don’t love. Or in a way you don’t love.

You’ve been treading water and hoping things will get better.

Here’s what I suggest you do:

  • Stop endlessly trying more things, in the hope you’ll find the right solution. You already know plenty.
  • Acknowledge what you really want to do, and allow yourself to want it.
  • Take stock of where you are, your strengths and assets.
  • Make space to grieve and heal from past experiences.
  • Start to make choices that put you at the centre, that are right for you and your strengths and talents, and your way of being in the world.
  • Get witnessing and support from someone who knows what it’s like.

You can’t do this on your own. Or you would have already.

This is what I know for sure:

Music is a powerful energy shifting medium.

When people like you are getting burned out and discouraged, there’s something going astray.

That’s why I’m doing this work.

Every single soul-driven musician has a unique role to play in creating positive change in the world.

Including you!

I’d love to help you learn to create your own musical space.

I can help you find the alignment of your creative purpose.

And reconnect with the joy of making music from your heart and soul.

When you’re following your own musical heart’s path:

You’ll experience much better wellbeing

  • You’ll free up time and energy that will flow out to the rest of your life.
  • You’ll know you’re doing what you’re on this earth to do.
  • You’ll know you’re creating change in the world, using music as a divine tool for transformation.
  • You’ll feel connected to the flows of abundance.
  • You’ll experience more rewarding relationships.
  • You’ll start to experience creative flow.

My story:

I know what it feels like. To want to play the music that makes your heart sing, but not know how to get there.

At the age of six I experienced the joy of soul-aligned music, when I learned to play ukulele.

And then I spent nearly 50 years trying to get back to that feeling.

But it was a long and painful process! I kept hitting brick walls, and/or burning out, and having to start again.

First, I was sent off to violin lessons with an angry, scary teacher. Which weren’t joyful or fun.

I did fifteen years of classical music training, all the way to university. Since then I’ve played many instruments, in everything from symphony orchestras to rock bands.

I’ve made records, written songs, and even been in a few videos.

I’ve also done voice trainings and workshops, postgrad studies in expressive therapies, and trained in creativity for early childhood educators.

Finally, I found my way back to the ukulele, and it was just as fun and joyful as I remembered.

And I learned how to create my own musical space in the world.

For over ten years I’ve been teaching ukulele. I’ve guided hundreds of adults through the tender process of learning to play and sing at the same time. Many had never played music before in their lives.

If you value yourself, your gifts, your potential and dreams, it’s time to start tuning up.

  • How long can you keep all the balls in the air, while you postpone that which makes your heart sing?
  • My burnout experiences were hard on my physical and emotional health. And hard on my family. Also, recovering from burnout is expensive.
  • Getting un-stuck may be quicker and easier than you expect. But you won’t know until you try.
  • Also: music is joyful and fun. And, seriously, the world needs more people to be having fun right now.

Some frequent questions

Is this only for professional musicians?

This is for anyone who knows in their heart that music is a central, essential, non-negotiable part of their life.

Whether it’s about earning a living is going to be different for everyone.

What results can I get in six sessions?

In this time we can make a great start on your musical recovery.

I won’t promise that everything will suddenly burst into song. But you’ll make a start. And you’ll be going in the right direction at last.

After the initial three months I recommend that clients follow up with a monthly session for six months, to keep momentum and get ongoing support with their projects.

I’ve tried a lot of things and nothing has worked so far. Why is this different?

I hear you! I’ve been there. I tried everything before I worked with a coach.

My answer has three parts:

1. It’s really hard to do new things without external support. If you could do this on your own, you already would have.

2. This isn’t an external solution. I will not tell you what to do. I will support you to look for the answers within you, and take action on them.

3. If you’ve worked with other coaches, my difference (okay, one of my differences) is that I’m foregrounding music as a soul path in my coaching services.

Am I expected to do homework?

Yes. Coaching is much more effective and productive when you are prepared to put in some work in between sessions. This could be journaling or research, or work towards a project.

Is this like counselling?

Life coaching is very different from counselling. Counselling and psychotherapy are mental health specialties. I’m not a qualified mental health professional.

Can you help me get into the music industry?

No. This isn’t in my scope of coaching.

But I can help you work out if that’s the right path for you to take, and support you with identifying and growing some of the personal skills you’ll need to navigate your chosen path.

Practical details

How often are the coaching sessions?

A six session package is normally delivered in fortnightly intervals. I find that’s a good time to allow for integration and work towards tasks, practice and/or reflection.

Can I have more time between sessions?

There’s flexibility for life events. However, momentum may get lost when there is a big gap between sessions.

Platforms and communication

Coaching sessions take place on Zoom. In between sessions I welcome you contacting me by email.

What some of my clients say:

Expanding, fulfilling, profound

I knew I had a lot of creative energy, but I didn’t know where to begin.

The biggest change I’ve noticed after working with Alice is that I am now putting my own needs first.  I still get everything that is needed done in the day, but I now make space for my creative expression.  This has become a priority.

And the flow-on effect has been profound.  Because I feel more fulfilled, I’m able to handle the challenges of my day with so much more ease.

Rather than giving me the answers I was looking for, Alice kept reminding me to “get curious” as to why I did certain things / thought a certain way.

I really feel like some profound shifts happened during our time together.

I am so pleased that my creativity is now flowing – each and every day!

Suzanne

Held. Encouraged. Magic

I was in need of someone to help me make sense of conflicting needs, wants & obligations. I felt hopeful and reluctant.

In the first session I noticed a kind of magic happens when you engage someone else to hold you accountable for what you set out on together.

The magic of accountability.

Having someone who ‘believed in me’ without judgement allowed me to honestly explore it and bring so much more into reality.

Roslyn

Practical, supportive, affirming

I was struggling to find the time to be creative.

I was a little apprehensive about coaching at first because I wasn’t sure what I might focus on.

What I liked: Being taken through a process which worked so well, being able to have feedback and guidance to further the depth of my thinking.

I feel much more confident about my creative practice and my ability to cope with roadblocks. I now have a plan which I look forward to using.

I liked being set tasks to do each session, and having a framework which we were working through, allowing me to clarify my goals and create my plan.

I liked the way the process allowed for deepening my thinking.

I feel much more confident in my own skills and my ability to grow; to quickly deal with the negative voice during my creative practice.
